Alcatel Hero 2 Review

Six inch display phones are becoming mainstream these days because of the success of phones such as Samsung’s galaxy note 4 and Nexus 6. Alcatel is the latest brand which wants to venture into this segment with Hero 2. Let’s see what this phone has to offer.

Design:

It has an amazing design, made if an aluminum body with a very good 6 inch display, Hero 2 is incredibly slim and stylish smartphone for everyone. The bezels on the top and bottom are very less and so the front of the phone is dominated by the 6 inch display. The back of the phone is a very good quality plastic whereas the sides are aluminum. Right side of the phone has a micro SD card, volume rocker and a power button. Bottom has two speaker grills, a micro USB port and a stylus holder. The left side of the phone has nothing but the SIM card tray. Top of the phone has a headphone jack and the IR blaster. Back of the phone has the camera, flash and a connector for MagicFlip cover. The back is fingerprint friendly plastic. Stylus is very useful and works well with the display which works well with the pre-installed applications from Alcatel.

Display:

The display is just splendid. The Hero 2 has a TFT Full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixel with a pixel density of 367 ppi. Colors look very vibrant and the display is very bright. Alcatel has used a new glass technology called the One Glass Solution which makes the Hero 2 thinner than expected. The device stands at 7.9mm which makes it about 2mm thinner than the Google Nexus 6. The display is protected by Dragontrail glass which makes it scratch resistant and hard. This glass is coated with a Oleo phobic coating to reduce fingerprints.

Performance:

The phone has a MediaTek octa-core MT8392 processor. The processor has an 8 Cortex-A7 cores and a quad core Mali 450MP GPU clocked at 2.0 GHz. The processor is without doubt one of the fastest Cortex based chipset available right now. The performance is very good on par with the famous smartphones from HTC and Samsung.

Battery:

Unfortunately it is the weakest thing on the otherwise amazing value for the price phone. It has a 3100 mAh unit which should ideally work for a day but it managed a decent 14 hours under normal usage.

Camera:

The phone has a 13.1 megapixel camera and is superb which is complemented by its 6 inch display. Photos are very vibrant and color reproduction is amazing. The phone doesn’t overexpose shots. Camera application by Alcatel is useful having HDR, sports mode and other modes.

Software:

The Hero 2 comes with Android 4.4.2 out of the box with a light Alcatel Onetouch customized skin. The icons have good effects and overall UI design is easy to use and pleasant to watch. The experience with UI is fast and fluid and doesn’t have any problems with using it. For supporting the stylus, the phone has useful applications such as Sketch Mate and Fast Math

Extras:
  • MagicFlip DJ, a mini DJ mix panel which allows you to mix your own tracks on the go.
  • Sidekick 2, users can remotely control TV, music and more.
  • ALCATEL ONETOUCH tied up with Swedish DJ AVICII to create the Hero 2 powered by AVICII edition
  • Alcatel Hero 2 is priced at 1699 AED in UAE.
